Sediment vs Carbon: What Each Filter Actually Removes

Sediment and carbon are the two most common filter stages in a residential system, and they are frequently confused for doing the same job. They do not. Understanding the difference explains why most quality systems, including ours, use both rather than either one alone.
Sediment Filtration: A Physical Barrier

A sediment filter is a mechanical strainer. Water is forced through graded-density material, typically food-grade polypropylene, that physically blocks particles above a certain size, in our case 1 micron. It catches rust, sand, silt and fine dirt: anything solid suspended in the water. It does nothing to chlorine, chloramine, dissolved chemicals or taste. It is purely a size-exclusion process.
Carbon Filtration: A Chemical Process

A carbon block filter works differently, through adsorption. Contaminants in the water bind to the surface of activated carbon media as it passes through. This is highly effective for chlorine, taste and odour compounds, and a range of other dissolved substances, but it does very little for suspended solid particles the way a sediment filter does.
Why You Usually Want Both
The two stages protect each other and cover each other's blind spots. Sediment filtration removes the particles that would otherwise clog and coat the carbon media, extending its usable life. Carbon filtration removes the chemical contaminants that sediment filtration cannot touch. Run water through carbon alone in a supply with meaningful sediment content, and the carbon block clogs and needs replacing far sooner than its rated life. Run water through sediment alone, and chlorine and chloramine pass straight through untouched.
What Neither One Removes
Neither sediment nor standard carbon filtration removes fluoride, and standard carbon is not effective against chloramine specifically, which is now the primary disinfectant in most major Australian cities.
